Medicus Junior Update Week of 9/12/2011 September 15, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in News.comments closed
Though the Medicus Junior Golf Program has seen a reduction in tournament golf due to the school season, our Florida high school juniors are contributing greatly to the success of their respective teams. With only one senior this year, our juniors are laying the foundation for the years to come and what it takes to juggle all the activities associated with academics and athletics.
The program is also growing weekly as the Medicus Junior Training Program provides parents and youth to learn to play a game that can last a lifetime, a venue that provides outdoor activities that gets our youth up and moving and away from all the technology trappings, and an environment where activities and camaraderie can be achieved with kids that have a similar passion. Growth has been such where we have added an assistant to help Coach Chris and myself to assure that the personal touch of training is maintained. In an area where the population is approximately 14,000, at the end of next week we will have over 40 juniors participating in a year round training program. We have been blessed.
With 14 of our golfers ranked in Junior Golf Scoreboard, we strongly believe that we have only scratched the surface to what can be achieved in junior golf on the panhandle of Florida.
The demand has also prompted us to start a beginners program to introduce kids to the game. This program will act as our feeder system into our full blown program. Response has been tremendous. Our goal is to leave no junior behind and to do everything in our power to grow a game which has taken a big hit over the last two years. A diatribe could be written as to the failings of golfdom but we will save that for another date.
Thanks everyone for your continued support.

2 – Hours to More Distance Training September 12, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in Fullswing, News.comments closed
We are happy to announce, that at the end of this week (week of Sept 12), we will be launching a new training opportunity. This particular training was developed by listening to golfers and then proceeding with due diligence to assure that a training program was designed to meet the need of the consumer. Thus, the 2 – Hours to More Distance was developed.
Traditional instructions usual response to more distance and/or power is for the golfer to just swing faster or work on the fundamentals of the swing. Neither of these suggestions or solutions is incorrect but, there is more…..much more….to hitting that little golf ball further. There is a process, a system, a program that will assure that you do achieve greater distance.

Hey Chris,
This is Tyler. I wanted to thank you for the lesson last week while I was in Destin. It was well worth the money to spend the time with you on the course and diagnosing my swing. I also wanted to thank you for sending me the video lesson with my swing breakdown.
Having said that, last night, I just played the best round of my life so far. In my league I just shot a 42 on nine holes at a challenging course in my league. My handicap has been about 14 for this year but I knew if I could be more consistant I could play much better than that. We played the best team in our league and we were counted out 34 points back from the leader with only 3 weeks left. We played the number one team and got 29 points to their 10 points. The guy I played is the league commissioner and he only scored one point on me. We are now only 14 strokes back of the leader. It was a great night and your lessons helped make a big impact in my game so far. I think I can improve even more if I can keep this up.
I will continue to work on the things you showed me and see you next year for another lesson when I get down there.
Thanks!
Tyler

Medicus Juniors Performance Update at First Tee “Divot Derby” July 28, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in News.comments closed
This past week was the Divot Derby which is put on by the First Tee of Pensacola and sponsored by Bubba Watson.
Our juniors performed quite nicely at the Derby and following are the results:
In the boys 16-18 age group Brandon finished in 3rd place for the overall and Harrison was 4th. With his 4th place finish, Harrison will be joining Brandon on the 3-man team who will represent the Emerald Coast Junior Golf Tour at the Florida Team Championship. Nice job boys and best wishes.
In the girls 14-15 age group the usual suspects were at the top. Maddy finished first in the age group and was in 3rd place for the overall title. Maddy also shot her personal best nine holes in the final round back 9 as she carded a 2-under 34. She showed again the tenacity to never ever quit fighting. Her front nine 42 would have derailed most golfers but not her. She also learned the important lesson of “GOING FOR IT” on par 5’s. HAHA! Juniors ask her and I am sure she will share.
The girls 14-15 saw Antonia finish 2nd and Hallie 4th. For Antonia she shot her personal best tournament round by carding a 76 in round two. Hallie likewise shot a personal best 84 in round 2. Great job ladies.
In the boys 12-13, Kevin, Brian and AJ (though he does not get a chance to come over as much, I still consider him one on mine!) picked up where a small band of golfers named Brock, Stephen, Tyler and Alex Lucking used to dominate. Kevin, Brian and AJ finished 1, 2 and 3 to lap the field. Awesome!
In the boys 12-13 second flight, Patrick Poate finished in first place. ATTA’ boy buddy!!!!!!
In the girls 12-13 Kasey, who jumps in a hits balls with us from time to time, won the age group. I am waiting for the shoe to drop and for Kasey to approach me and say, “Coach Randy, I’m ready!” LOL!!!!
In First Tee master boys division 13 and under, Kevin was this year’s winner. In the junior master boys 14-15, Bailey finished 5th. Girls 14-15 Hallie finished 1st for the year. Ages 12-13 AJ was first followed by Brian in 3rd place for the year.
I will admit that our First Tee participation is quite low but I think for a very good reason. The level of competition that our kids participate in on the regional and national level is secondary to none. We thank the First Tee and the Emerald Coast Junior Tour for the opportunity for our Medicus Juniors to cut their teeth in tournament play. Job well done by all!

Medicus Juniors Roll at 32nd Annual Daily News Junior Classic July 18, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in News.comments closed
With 14 Medicus junior golfers entered in this past weeks 32nd Annual Daily News Junior Classic tournament expectations were quite high and we are proud to say our Medicus junior golfers did not disappoint. For the two days our juniors posted 19 rounds in the 70’s out od 28 rounds. Following are some of the highlights.
Brandon – With an opening round 67 Brandon positioned himself nicely to defend his boys overall title and following an even par 72 in the second round became a three-peat winner. With the Divot Derby this coming week Brandon will be ending one of the best, if not the best, junior golf careers in the panhandle.
Maddy – Going into the event Maddy was no doubt the favorite to win her age group as she is not only the dominating player in the group but also one of the top girl junior golfers for all ages. So Maddy lived up to the billing and won her age group but that is not the end of the story. Following a 3-putt bogey on the final hole of first round, Maddy posted an even par 72 and found herself 2 shots behind Sarah, who had won 3 of last 4 Daily News titles and will be playing this fall at Southern Miss.
The final round saw something that would have shook most players as Maddy topped her tee shot on the first hole. Maddy though demonstrated the typical resilience, focus and fight (I have come to expect) beyond her age of 14 by buckling down and at the turn had posted a 1-under 35 and had tied for the lead. With a final round 72 Maddy forced a sudden death playoff with Sarah and after 5 grueling playoff holes Maddy finshed in 2nd place for the overall title. What an event for her as personal bests were destroyed. She played 40 holes at even par.
Maddy also performed like I have seen no other junior perform. Not one time, and I mean not one time did she ever waiver from her pre-shot routine. If our junior golfers would copy Maddy’s attitude, how meticulous she is in pre-shot, work ethic, they would improve tremendously. It is machine like! Congrats Maddy and we are all very proud of you. You have positioned yourself quite nicely as one of the top, if not the top, girl golfer’s in the area for 2012.
Brock - It has been a great summer for Brock. Like Maddy, and at 13 years old, Brock has positioned himself to be one of the top boy golfers in our area for 2012 and that is for all ages. The proof of that is proven and began at Rocky Bayou where it took Brandon to beat Brock for the overall. We thought there was going to be a repeat this past week but in round 2 Brock came up short but still performed quite nicely.
After a final round 2-under 70, Brock again became paired with Brandon in the final group for the boys overall champion. With a final round 74, Brock finished 2nd in the boys 14-15 age group and tied for 4th for the boys overall title.
With this being Brock’s last event for the summer I would like to say it has been quite a year. Starting with our 7:30am chilly morning golf practices before school, followed by mom bringing Chick-filet biscuits, it was all good and fun! You have earned a well-deserved break. Very very proud coaches!
Personal Best and Special Mention
Tyler – In the 32 year history of the tournament, there has not been a hole in one. Tyler now holds the distinction of the first hole in one when his aced #12 with a pitching wedge. Tyler’s tournament scores were 78 – 81. Way to go T-man.
Ivey – After a layoff from tournament golf, and joining us about 5 weeks ago, Ivey knocked off the rust at the recent ECJRT at Stonebrook. Then at the Daily News, things began to click. With an opening round 74 Ivey posted her personal best tournament score. With a solid start in the final round Ivey was well placed but in the closing holes she had a couple of hiccups but still finished the event 74 – 78 to serve notice that she is back. Way to go Ivey and keep up the awesome work.
MJ – What a way to perform in one’s first tournament. After an opening round 82, Coach Chris and I were being updated on MJ’s fine play so we scurried over to MJ’s last hole to see him finish. Arriving just in time, we saw MJ pitch in from off the green to shoot a 75. Outstanding! Now this is setting the bar pretty high for future tournaments. HAHA!!! Great job MJ!
Hallie – Like Maddy, Hallie is one of our worker bees. With a work ethic that I have seldom seen, we have seen Hallie start with us and had not broken 120 in a one day event. I am so very proud to state that this is and has been destroyed this year and the icing on the cake was her Daily News performance. After a terrible break with a lost ball on the last tee shot (a triple), Hallie finished the event by shooting scores of 89-82. Ladies a gentleman that is a 171 and just blows her old scores from last year away! Hallie, congrats on a well-deserved personal best as you are the model for hard work! Interestingly, it pays off. Go figure!
Nate – After previous tournament struggles, we saw Nate posted his best tournament scores with an 81 – 79. Way to go Nate!!
Antonia – I did some digging to confirm but could not find anything that would refute that this was Antonia’s personal best two day event score wise. Antonia shot an 81 – 79. Nice positive momentum builder.
Congratulations and great job by all our juniors and we look forward to the balance of the summer season.

Junior Golf Update Week of May 15, 2011 May 22, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in News.comments closed
The tournament schedule has been slow following the Medicus Cup but last weekend the Southeast Junior Golf Tour held a two day event at Santa Rosa CC. In her age group, Madison has dominated her competition on this tour but the great thing that this tour has created is that a player can win the overall boys or girls title. With these tournaments being junior ranked events, and if the event does not have the amount of participants to meet the ranking criteria, then no ranking status is earned. This specific scenario happened this past weekend.
Madison, or who I always call Maddy, won her age group by 32 shots. Yes, 32. Trailing by 4 shots though for the overall girls title, Maddy tied the lowest round of the event in the second round to catapult her into a tie for the overall girls title. Not too shabby for just turning 14 but all know that her skill set ranks her as one of the top juniors in the panhandle of Florida. The tie put Maddy into a sudden death playoff and after both competitors made par on holes 1 and 2, Maddy bogeyed to finish second place overall. Congrats Maddy and we are very proud of you. Maddy finished the event with a two day score of 158 (81-77).
Above I mention Maddy being one of the top junior golfers on the panhandle and following is the “preponderance of proof”. Maddy is now ranked #987 in the world for all junior girls. In the Florida for her class of 2015, Maddy is ranked #10.
While we are speaking of rankings here are some highlights of a few of our other Medicus junior golfers:
Boys
Brandon – #199 World, #15 Florida class of 2011 (Commit to Columbia)
Trey – #57 Florida class of 2012 (verbally commit to WKU)
Trevor – #75 class of 2013 Florida
Harrison – #80 class of 2013 Florida
Brock – #7 class of 2016 Florida
Girls
Maddy – See above
Antonia – #24 Florida class of 2014
Morgan – #21 Florida class of 2015
Besides the juniors named above, there are several on the rise and they too will become ranked once certain criteria is met.

Junior Golf Update May 2, 2001 May 3, 2011
Posted by medicusdestin in News.comments closed
This past week was a very busy one for the Medicus Golf Junior Training Program as we saw our juniors competing in multiple events. Following is a review and “brags” for several of our junior golfers.
Destin Middle School golf team – The Destin Middle School finished there 2011 season undefeated and at Shalimar Pointe they won the county championship. The county team consisted of Brock, Tyler, Ryan, Evan, MJ and Alex. Brock was the county champ and along with Tyler and Ryan were named to the all-county team. Without an 8th grader on the team, and with only one loss over the last two seasons (only due to a rules infraction) it will be a challenge to keep the players focused next season. All of us will have the challenge of keeping the players from slipping into the trap of falling into bad habits. But I do not want to throw water on what the team has accomplished. Congrats!
Patrick – Congrats to Patrick on his first season of middle school golf. Patrick had a great year and played number 1 the last two events of the season and was consistently beating the previous #1 and #2 players. Matter of fact, if memory serves me correctly, his last two matches Patrick shot 1-over both times. Patrick started off strong at county but coming in had a couple hiccups but still performed nicely. As a 6th grader, Patrick’s role will be changing on his Ruckel team. Congrats!
Morgan – One of the main goals for Morgan this year was to win county and she did just that. The win provided us with back-to-back girls champion with Antonia winning last season. Morgan also was all-county and her county performance (boys and girls play from the same tee but different 9’s) would have placed her in the top 15 for all boys and girls. Due to Morgan’s performance she also led her team of Davidson to the girl’s county championship. Congrats!
Medicus Cup – As mentioned earlier, yesterday we finished up the 2nd year of the Medicus Cup Spring Series and the 2-day championship at Emerald Bay GC. Several of our players did not participate but none the less, our kids performed quite nicely in the very windy conditions. This event carries with it AJGA and FJT exemptions so it is more than just the big trophies that I provide with the winning players names on them, though most want the hardware.
Harrison – We are happy to say that the name on the big trophy at Emerald Bay will be that of one of our own….Harrison. Though leaking oil coming to the house, Harrison still held on to win the overall championship as well as the boys 16-18 age division. With his victory he also moved up to 2nd place in the overall Medicus Spring Series. He put in a ton of work leading to this event. Coach Chris and I had to force him to take days off from the course and range. One of those crazy correlations of getting out what one puts in. We can lead a player to water but it is sooner or later at the player’s feet to make it happen. Harrison, you did just that. You took responsibility for your own actions and the result was a win but even if you did not win, you gave it all. What more can coaches and parents ask for? Not much. Congrats!
Trevor – Most of our kids have met Trevor but a few have not but you will soon hear much about Trevor in the coming months and years. Trevor started with us about 3-4 weeks ago and in the Cup he finished 2 shots behind Harrison for a 2nd place finish, in the boys 16-18 age division, following his first round lead of one shot. With Harrison, Trevor and Chase (who is playing in the Alabama HS regionals in Mobile today) we have three sophomores who will be getting some nice college looks in the years to come. This just opens up other doors then for the younger kids who follow. Congrats!
Bailey – Like Trevor, Bailey has been with us for a month now and came out of the gates quite nicely. Bailey won the boys 12-13 age division. On number 9, which was his 18th hole on Sunday, Bailey missed a 6 foot birdie putt which would have given him the only round under par round for the two days but with his even par 72, he still was low score for the event and the champ. The win propelled Bailey into a second place finish in the cup series standings. Congrats!
Tyler – It was a great weekend for Tyler as well as a great week overall. Following the county championship win and making all-county, Tyler came into the weekend really well prepared to compete. I won’t at this time share a couple things that Tyler faced this week, though I will share with our other kids, but let’s just say, a couple barriers were overcome. Tyler was in second place going into the second day of play and it took the best round of the tournament (by Bailey) to keep him from winning the title. Tyler is hitting the ball so so good and is on the edge of really breaking through some scoring barriers. Congrats!
Hallie – Well, Hallie is one of those who work harder than anyone in the program and I am proud to say that again, hard work does pay off. On Sunday, Hallie destroyed her lowest tournament round by 11 strokes with an 85 and this is with a double on her last hole. Hallie started with me last August and since that time she has taken over 30 strokes off her game. It has been far from easy but she has the fight, desire, work ethic and perseverance that is an example for all. Hallie finished 3rd in the tournament (girls 12-14) as well as 3rd in the cup series. Congrats! One last thing, Hallie and mom (who was her caddy) had no idea where she stood on the 18th hole as they just kept writing down each hole score. HAHAHA! Another great lesson that we always tell the kids. Play each shot to the best of your ability and add em’ up at the end. Congrats!
Jordan – Fighting a touch of the flu, Jordan hung in there and finished 3rd in the boys and girls 7-9 age group. With her placement, Jordan also finished in 2nd in the cup series. Way to go Jo!
Maddy – Going into the championship Maddy led the cup series and with her 4th place finish secured the series championship. Maddy continues on her path being one of the top girl golfers in the whole area and is only 13 but that will change in June. It has been a great spring and there is so much great golf in her future. Congrats!
Kevin – Going into the event Kevin had already secured the boys 12-13 age division championship at the ripe old age of 11 (just turned 11 in February). It is hard to believe how young he is. HAHA!! Kevin was not as sharp as he usually is this weekend but his overall spring was awesome. Besides the Emerald Coast Tour events, Kevin traveled a couple weeks ago to Atlanta and finished 3rd in the Junior Masters. Now for all you middle school golfers. Don’t be surprised if you do not see Kevin living closer to Coach Randy and Coach Chris next year.
Trey – Though already verbally committed to college after next year, Trey is playing in events to stay sharp and though his first round was not at the usual level, Trey still came back with a strong 73 on Sunday and with a couple more birdie putts would have been pushing the leaders in defense of last year’s title. Trey’s round was the low of the event for the older age divisions.
JUNIORS! We are very very proud of you and though at times we hit bumps in the road, progress and development is never a straight line in this game. It is a humbling game and it is so easy to give up and quit but let me encourage you to continue to mature with both life and your game. Give all you have so that you can do your utmost to not look back and say, “if only I would have _________”. Yes, we coaches and parents push and prod to push you but always remember we do it because we care deeply and want you to reach your goals and potential.
